I've never bought a costume from the ingame store before, will I only need to buy it once and then be able to copy it to other characters like hats etc. ?

Yes, Sierraa is right on. Costumes are rather fun to combine with regular armors, I often use the head costume part with regular armors. A side effect of costumes is that they can make your character look a bit more bulky (can't say if this is true for female characters but it sure makes male characters as big as a beefy warrior). Costumes also allows you to dye black cheaply.. as you basically only have to dye 2 pieces rather than a full armor set to get a black appearance. I believe all armors can be dyed, including the head pieces. This is in contrast to the regular festival hats were only a select few can be dyed. Feel free to ask if anything else you might wonder about costumes.
